Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra (Domus of Stone Carpets)

The Domus of Stone Carpets, so called by Federico Zeri, is an extraordinary archaeological site: one of the biggest site discovered in Italy during the last years. It was inaugurated by the President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in 2002 and in 2004 won the important recognition “Bell’Italia”.

The entrance is through the old Church of S. Eufemia: from here visitors reach the ticket office and then enter the Domus, which is located in a modern, underground area of 400 mq decorated with wonderful mosaics on the floor of an ancient Byzantine home (V-VI century AC).
Walking on differents transparent runways, visitors can admire the beautiful pavements decorated with geometric elements but also with flowers, vegetables and figurative elements made in mosaic.
For exemple, visitors can admire the mosaic called “The Dance of the Four Seasons”: a unique representetion of the four genius dancing in a circle or the mosaic of “The Good Shepherd”: different from the usually Christian representation.
It’s a deep and unique experience in the ancient history of our town.
